The First-Then Strategy works by using a fun, motivating activity as a reinforcer for a less preferred task.
eg “First tidy up the game, then we’ll do painting” or “First do reading, then do drawing”
This strategy works best when your child is allowed to choose (within sensible limits) what they would like the reinforcer activity to be.
Please note: If your child has a calming or relaxing activity or item which they use to soothe and regulate them self, do not put this activity in the ‘then’ box to make them earn it. That will only cause your child increased anxiety and distress.
Also, First/Then boards might not benefit children with demand avoidance who view the “first” activity as too great a demand on them.
